State Govt happy with good response to teaching improvement programme

department has launched four skill enhancement courses for school teachers in English language, mathematics, science and learning outcomes. The first batch of English language teachers was trained last year while training of other teachers would he undertaken soon.
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Education Minister Rajendra Darda had promised to improve qualby of education and sharpen the leaching skills of the teachers and particularly their ability to teach and converse in chaste Englis. For this purpose they have already ropes in British Council and ITT. Four courses have been devised including two with British Council, one with NT. Mumbai and one with Accenturc I'rnate Limited British Council has been asked to undertake training programme to improve the teaching of English language in the slate. In both cases, master trainers have been trained by the council and they leach the other teachers in their cluster. The tie-up with the IIT is to increase (he level of understanding of mathematics in students.
Secreiary of the Education Department Ashwini Bhide recent by convened a met-ting to review the progress of training being offered to teachers across Maharashtra. It was attended by senior officials including S Chockalingam. Director of Education Mahavir Mane. The meeting discussed actual impact on improvement of teaching quality and role played by external agencies like BriishCouneil. HT. Logistical problems and practical difficulties in implementing such programmes were a I so discussed. The Education department is also pondering over another proposal to use IT to directly reach up to teachers, instead of following the conventional method to first hold workshops for master trainers who in turn are expected to teach others.
The third programme is for leadership development of officers and headmasters in the districts that have high dropout rates.
According to education department they have identified about 10 districts with a high dropout rate and decided to train the officials in leadership skills to reduce it.
