This wasdisclosed by M S Reddy, Chief Conservator of Forest and Field Director. Pencil Tiger Reserve, where the population of vultures is increasing, while talking to 'The Hitavada' here on Monday. He said. he has recently submitted the proposal to Sarj an Bhagat. Chief Wildlife Warden. Maharashtra, for his consideration.
The total area of the zone covers parts of Gadchiroli. Gondia and Yavatmal districts. The protected areas of Peneh and Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserves are also covered in the zone. Remnant populations of both White-hacked vulture 'Gyps benaglensis' and Long-billed vulture 'Gyps indieus" are reported from this area. The area will also be good as a release site for the White-backed vultures and Long-billed vultures breeding at Vulture Conservation Breeding Centres across India.
The vulture action plan of the Central Government in 2006 and South Asian Vulture Recover)' Plan 2004 recommended a complete ban on veterinary use of dielofenac, idenlification of a vullure safe drug and establishment of Vulture Conservation Breeding Programme to save the vullure from immineni extinction. Vultures are exposed to [oxic levels of diclofenac when they feed on carcasses of livestock and the result is alarming depletion in the population. Mcloxicam was idenlified as vullure safe drug hut ii has still not become very population.
Reddy said that a team of forestmen and volunteers would organise workshops in zone area to create awareness among people, particularly in rural areas, and request them not to use diclofenac. FDA team would also raid the shops selling diselofenac. despite ban. Forestmen will make publicity and take other steps for preserving this critically endangered species.
It may be noted that population of vultures is gradually increasing in t iadehiroli district.
