THE kidnapping and brutal murder of eight-year-old Yug Chandak has brought back uasettling memories of child kidnapping-and-murder cases that had stunned the Orange City in the past 14 years. As many as eight such tragic and terrifying child abductions and murders have been reported in this period, and one of them remains unsolved till date.
The kidnapping of Aditya Parekh. one-and-a-half-year-old son of a prominent bullion trader, on May 21. 2000. is the case that has not been cracked as yet.
Aditya was kidtiapped by two persons when he was playing in front of his house in Ambazari area. Due to the failure of City Police to unfold the mystery behind the kidnapping, the Slate Government had handed over the investigations to the State CID (Crime). Even after more than 14 years of the incident, neither the boy nor kidnappers have been traced.
Another incident took place on September 25.2000 in which another child Harekrishna Thakral. son of a businessman, was kidnapped from Gandhibag Garden by some unidentified persons with the assistance of his servant Vinod Shripate. Harekrishna's body was found in thejunglesof Washimdisirici. Vinod Shripate. too. was murdered near village Makardhokda on Umrer Road in Nagpur district.
A Standard VIII student. Swanand Dunie, was kidnapped when he was returning home froma private tuition class in Gandhi Nagar. Swanand was murdered in Wadi area. Amhazari Police arrested the accused in the case. However, the accused were later acquitted by the court as the prosecution failed to prove the charges againsi them. This case had brought to fore the need for deter rent punishment to. and conviction of, the accused in such cases.
Another child belonging to Fender family of Imamhada was kidnapped and murdered. The killers had stuffed die body in a gunny bag and dumped it at an isolated place in the premises of Government Medical College & Hospital. The brutality had shaken the entire city.
In 2011. Kush Kataria. an eight-year-old son of a prominent businessman, was kidnapped and murdered for ransom. Kush was killed by Ayush Pugalia. a youth who was his neighbour. The cops arrested Ayush. Following huge public outcry and widespread demand for noose to the killer, the Stale Government appointed Adv Ujwal Nikam as Special Public Prosecutor in the case. The court sentenced Ayush Pugalia todouble life impris-onment. The case had brought to fore the issue of child safety, and Nagpurians took to streets to condemn the murder. The lawyers had resolved not to stand up to defend the murderer.
On June 30. 2013. the Orange City received another jolt when another boy Yash alias Sahil Borkar. was kidnapped from MIHAN area. The kidnappers demanded Rs rwo lakh from his father hut killed the boy in Khapri area. Once again. Nagpurians expressed their anguish and anger over the case and demanded the toughest punishment tor kidnappers and murderers.
And the lastest one in this series is YugChandakcase. Yug,aneight-year-old son of prominent dental surgeon Dr Mukesh Chandak. was kidnapped by Rajesh Daware and Arvind Singh after the boy returned from his school on Monday. Daware
