THE Rastrasant Tukadoji Maharuj Nagpur University will hold ils I (H>th convocation on Friday. Considering il as an apt occasion to remember the principles for which the University was started. The Hitavada revisits a time when the University was established on January 28, 1924. The first Chancellor of this now-90~year-old university Sir Frank Sly, had, on the occasion of its launching this prestigious institution, t:\pressed hope that that the new University would "raise the standard of culture "from year to year.
Vie Hitavada reproduces his speech verlhitim so that we can reconnect with the goals set on the oiiasion of University's establishment.
Sir Frank Sly said:
"Mr Vice Chancellor and Members of the Court
It is a mailer of great pride and satisfaction to me that the University of Nagpur should come Into being during my tenure of the office of Governor of this province and tint I should be the First Chancellor. As you are a!I aware, higher education in this province has been for many years under the control of the University of Allahabad and I am sure thai your first wish is that we should express our deep sense of the obligation which the schools and colleges of this province owe to that University in moulding secondary and collegiate education.
We have now brought to birth a University of our own. Like all institutions which take root and are of permanent stability, the University is the result of many years of careful thought and planning. I do not propose to give you many details of that history. The Committee appointed in 1914. animated by the highest ideals of University education, prepared a scheme for the establishment of a teaching university. From its first inception, this University owes much to the expert knowledge of Mrs C E W Jones, now Director
