Govt asks civic bodies to complete all JNNURM works by December

MAHARASHTRA Government has directed all Municipal Corporations to complete all on-going and sanctioned projects under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) before December 2014. The Central Government may not provides further fund for incomplete projects. This would affect some projects of Orange city including uninterrupted watersup-ply 24x7 and Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) water supply scheme to undeveloped layouts.

Highly placed sources from Mumhai informed that Shrikant Singh. Principal Secretary in Urban Development Department of State Government convened a meeting of all Municipal Corporation Officers at Mumbai on Wednesday. It may be mentioned that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government is going to launch new mission by next month before Diwali. The new Governineni may include these incomplete projects in new mission.

It may be mentioned that inordinate delay and slow pace of ongoing works arc ail set to cost very dearly to Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC» in coming months as the Centre has decided not to share burden of any incomplete project beyond December 2014. Earlier, the dead-I ine was March 2014. that was extended by the new Government.

Most of the ambitious projects under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) are running behind schedule for various reasons. Bui notwithstanding any reason, the Centre has taken a policy decision to discontinue its financial assistance to JNNURM works beyond current financial year.

Worse, the Centre has asked concerned Stale Government to foot the bill. Right now. the civic body is facing financial difficulty as Stale has tailed to release its share for JNNURM works. This is considered as a major setback for cities like Nagpur. where civic bodies are unable to release even salaries of its staffers and state has just refused to extend any compensation package.

Sources claimed that Maskasath Railway Over Bridge, second plm.se of Ram Jhula. may be affected by the decision. Central Government has sanctioned projects worth of Rs 1.581 crore for the orange city. The awarded cost of the project is Rs 1,652 crore.

The Central Government is sharing burden of 50 per cent cost while 30 per cent cost is shared by NMC and 20 per cent cost is borne by the State Government. Sources claimed that NMC has completed almost 9 project and 8 projects are remaining.
