Good news: Ground water level satisfactory in Nagpur division
THE overall underground water level in Nagpur division has increased as per the readings taken by Groundwater Survey and Development Agency (GSDA) in the observation wells in July 2014. There are only three tehsils in Chandrapur district Pomhhurna. Kopania and Nagpur where the water level has gone down by a little over one metre.
GSDA lakes readings of water levels in 621 observation wells situated in the division consisting of Nagpur. Bhandara. Gondia, Wardha. Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts in October. January. March and May every year. However, due to dry spell causing anxiety in June this year, lite higher authoritiesofGSDA asked the officials concerned to take special readings of the levels in the division to know water status underground.
The officials tallied July figures of the levels with the readings taken in May as usual. They found that raise in water level by two to three metres in Bhiwapur in Nagpur district. Dhanora in Gadchiroli district and Salckasa in Gondia district. The figures reveal that ground water level has increased by one to two metres at 14 tehsils in the division. Such tehsils include: Kamptee, Parseoni, Umrer in Nagpur district, Karanja in Wardha district. Mohadi. Sakoli, and Paoni tehsils of Bhandara district. Arjuni-Morgaon. Deori, Goregaon and Tiroda in Gondia district, Kurkheda. Gadchiroli and Bhamragad in Gadchiroli district.
Not a single tehsil from Chamlrapur district registered rise in the level even up to half a metre. In fact, the comparative study shows decrease in the level in as many as 13 tehsils of the total of 15 in this district.
This was disclosed by Dr V K Pakhmode. Senior Geologist. GSDA. Nagpur, while talking to 'The Hitavada' here on Tuesday. He said that special readings of levels in different observation wells had been taken to get an idea as to what would be the situation in the next summer, if rains played a hide-and-seek game.
However, there is no scarcity of underground water, even after taking into coasideration pumping out of water by rural masses during summer months. In view of good rains last year, the levels had generally gone up in the division and now there is no cause for worry. Pakhmode pointed out.
The average rainall in Nagpur division is 1161 mm. As per the Agriculture Department website the division has recorded 494 mm rainfall from June one till today, the percentage being 42.5.
Shilpa Janak. Junior Geologist, was present during discussion.
