PRIME Minister Narendra Modi is likely 10 lay foundation stone of ambitious Metro Rail on August 21 at Nagpur. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying hard to get Prime Minister's time to lay foundation stone for this project. Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari is trying hard to lay the stone before announcement of the model code of conduct for ensuing assembly elections. The total cost of the project is around Rs 10.526 crore as per present market cost. The cost of metro rail has increased by almost Rs 2.500 crore during intervening period. The DMRC has proposed Mumbai-like elevated metro rail. Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar may also share the dais with Prime Minister, sources confirmed.
Highly placed sources confirmed that   newly-appointed   Guardian Minister Dr Nitin Raut and Minister of State for Finance Rajendra Mulak used their goinJ offices and influence in clearing the file of metro rail from Finance Department. Chief Secretary and Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan at one stroke on Wednesday.
Highly placed sources confirmed that approval of Public Investment Board (PIB) is necessary for Metro Rail project. NIT Chairman Pravin Darade will give presentation before PIB on August 8 at New Delhi.
The PIB will approve the proposal after examining certain significant aspects related to the viability of the proposal. After getting nod of PIB. the proposal will be sent to Union Cabinet for final nod.Nagpur Improvement Trust (NTT). a nodal agency has started preparation for organising massive programme of Prime Minister. This will be a maiden visit of Narendra Modi at Nagpur after taking charge of Prime Minister.
Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) has given replies of various queries asked by Union Home Department. Finance Department. Railways, and Highways. After nod from Cabinet, the NIT will start constitution of Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for implementation of project and its subsequent operation and maintenance in the city. The constitution of Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) is also pending for legislation. The Central government has directed State to enact a policy for formation of UMTA. The UMTA would be headed by Chief Secretary and it would have Secretaries of all the departments to clear way for operating metro rail. The State Government has assured Central Government to form SPV and UMTA after final nod from the cabinet. It may be mentioned that Maharashtra Government has already given in-principal nod to metro rail for the orange city. Delhi Rail Metro Corporation (DMRCI) has submitted detailed project report to construct two corridors of metro rail connecting 39 kms of North-South and East West corridors.
