Dr Deshpande Sangeet Samaroh begins
THE 23RD Dr Vasantrao Deshpande Sangeel Samaroh . organised by the South central Zone Cultural Centre (SCZCC) got off toa melodious start at the Dr Vasantrao Deshpande hall on Wednesday.
Justice BhushanGawai. Director SCZCC Dr Piush Kumar. Prasanna Warade. Divisional Commissioner Anoop Kumar, and CMD of Western Coalfields Limited Om Prakash lighted the lamp to inaugurate the samaroh.
The programme began with a Jugalbandi performed by Internationally famous flutist Pt Ronu Majumdar, Carnatic vocalist B Jayashree, Tabalchi Ramdas Palsule and Packhwaj maestro Sumesh Narayan. The Raga presented was " Jhinjhoti" also known in Carnatic music as "Kabinarayani", a Kriti by Thaygaraja. that had a lilting alap and jod followed by a gat that revealed the magic of flute that blended gracefully with the well seasoned voice of B Jayashree who matched Pt Ronu's mesmerising meends with some super fine cascading taans. The following Kaga Jaijaywanti. also known in carnatic music as Dwijavami was totally dominated by Majumdar. It had a bandish "More Mandir Ajahun Nahi Aye" set to teen taal. lt had a thrilling percussion jugalbandi between Tabalchi Ramdas Palsule and Summesh Narayan that drew a loud applause from the audience. Their 'sawal jawab' were quite impressive. The concluding item of the first part of the samaroh was a Bhajan 'Begnc Baro or Krishna Jaldi Aao' that was luke warm.
The second half was most awaited as vocalists Pi Rajan aiui Sajan Mishra took the stage . They presented the Raga "Jog Kauns" that had a vilambit in Kahe Guniaan kare Bavre set to ektaal and a drut' Jagat Mai Samaj Sapna' set to ektaal. The duo. had the audience completely spellbound with their invocation to Godess Saraswati and evocation to man to see reason and avoid Ego.
Age has not mellowed their performance that had some fine sargams. Bol taans and the hall mark Banarasi Taans with a smooth flow from lower to higher octaves.
However, once again time constrainl made (hem cut short their essay. Which could have exiended comfortably as their vocal chords had warmed up to produce a magic spell.
Pi Rajan and Sajan Mishra took up Raga Nand for their second presentation that had a bandish set to rupak taal in 'Aye Bhavra Ja' the remaining items were not reviewed as die report had to be filed in time.
Raju Gujar provided adequate labia accompaniment while Sandip Gurmule was impressive on the harmonium. Tanpura accompaniment was provided by Vinod Wakhrc disciple of Pt Rajan and Sajan Mishra and Ajit Kulkarni disciple of Pi Rajeshwar Bobde. All the artists were felicitated with a floral bouquet. Shweta Shclgaonkar conducted ihc proceedings.

A new portrait of Dr Vasantrao Deshpandc placed on one side added to the decor and set up. The meticulously designed stage and entrance by the Staff of SCZCC under the motivation of Dr Piush Kumar deserves praise. It clearly reveals the spirit and enthusiasm of the SCZCC in organising such a prestigious festival, something that can be replicated by others.
