THANKS to the apathy of the Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) and various authorities in maintaining Mansar excavation site, the huge ancient structure found during the excavation is on verge of collision. Mansar. which has the potential to be a world heritage site, is losing its valuable artifacts and precious treasure due to this apathy. The 10x10 ft portion of the palace located at northeast side of the excavation site has already collapsed while the huge walls on the east and west sides of the same structure have developed major breaches and can collapse at any point of time. Even after the repeated requests by the social groups and orders issued by the court, the authorities have failed to take care of this structure. The ancient bricks can be seen spread all over the site. The Mansar sile is a rich depository of archaeological marvels and has thrown light on historically important events and unique remains indicating ancient civilisations. In 1972, an image of adeity. later identified as Shiva Vamana was found from a hillock in Mansar. locally known as Hidimba Tekdi. Important excavations were carried out at the ancient sites of Mansar since 1997-98. under the aegis of the Bodhisatva Nagarjun Smarak Samstha Va Anusandhan Kendra. Nagpur and under the directions of Jagai Pali Joshi and A. K. Sharma. So far 5 siles have been excavated in Mansar.
The discovery has made Mansar one of the prime archaeological sites in the country. These excavations have resulted in the discovery of various shrines and a palace complex identified as Pravarapura. the capital of the Vakataka king Pravarasena II (1st half of 5th century).
This palace is lying in dilapidated condition and needs urgent attention of the ASI. Adjacent to this palace, on HidimhaTekdi. anextensive temple complex has been unearthed, identified as Pravaresvara. A 3 m tall lime model of a male human figure in crouching position was found underneath one of the terraces. This is the sign of Purushmedh' Yadnya performed during the Vakatakaage. Significant 5th-century sculptures of Hindu deities, artifacts and some coins have been discovered in the excavations.
The water reservoir around the site and findings of ancient tools and other objects point to the fact that a large population inhabited the area 1600 years ago. The demand has been raised to pay urgem attention to the Mansar sile. protect and preserve the site and take action against illegal constructions coming up near it.
