Lecture on farmers' plight held

"AGRICULTURE can be a lucrative affair with the combination of right infrastructure, management and blessing of the Weather God. However, farmers of the region are facing big losses every year. The extreme conditions are even forcing many to commit suicide.** said well-known journalist and activist Chandrakant Wankhade.
He was delivering speech on the topic 'Ecnomic crisis of agriculture' organised by Sant Gadgebaba Amravati University (SGAU) at Laxmidevi Radhakisan To shniwal College in Akola under Vasantrao Naik Memorial lecture series. Dr Jaikiran         Tidke.       Pro-Vice

Wankhade further said that 3.40 lakh farmers in die country and 35,(XX) in Vidarbha have committed suicide so far. "Serious though! should be given to find out reason behind the suicides and to derive solutions. Farmers live with debts and end with debts. For many years, agriculture has been a business of losses. Farmers have begun lo lose the ur their self pride. It is necessary to show some light to farmers to save agriculture system of the country. To change economics of agriculture it is necessary to ascertain rates to agricultural produce on the basis of production cost," he said. Decrease in rales is also one of
the reasons for suicides by farmers. Wankhade further pointed out.
I le also mentioned that in spite of increase in agricultural produce every year profits were not increasing- In our country, we need to consider the agriculture sector more sensitively, he added.
Dr Tidke, in his presidential speech, lamented that even though people are getting more and more educated today, they are losing a sense of responsibilities towards the society.
Adv Mohata also expressed his thoughts. Dr Surendra Manik gave introductory remarks while Principal Dr Chapake gave welcome speech. Vilas Nandurkar conducted the programme and Dr Mahesh Dabare proposed a vote of thanks. Principals and teachers of different colleges, students and citizens were present in large numbers for the lecture.
