Panel approves In principle buffer of two tiger reserves


EXPERTS of Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve (NNTR) Buffer committee gave approval 'in Principle on Tuesday 10 827 sq km buffer area to this tiger reserve and asked authorises concerned to conduct meeting of village representatives to convince them on benefits they would avail by getting buffer status.

The forest officials presented the revised proposal for buffer area as suggested by the committee earlier that includes 827 sq km area of forest from Gondia and Bhandara divisions and Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM). The committee had suggested the officials to coasider prime tiger corridor connecting Nagzira with Navegaon through which the national highway passes and corridor towards Pencil Tiger Reserve.
Accordingly, die new area includes 186 villages, including 21 abandoned villages. Out of this. 127 villages come in Gondia district and 51 in Bhandara district. The area provides sufficient cushioning lo Kola. Nagzira, New Navegaon Wildlife Sanctuaries towards north as well to Navegaon National Park.
The committee reviewed the opin ion of different stakeholders coming in the proposed buffer. FDCM briefed the committee that after studying area it would communicate the opinion to the committee. Forest Department also briefed the committee about consultatioas conducted in all the 186 villages. While 153 villages agreed, as many as 51 villages resolved in gram sabhas that ihcy have certain fears about man agement of the proposed buffer and hence they would not like to be part of buffer zone. The committee decided to call village representatives in separate meeting to explain them about the benefits, informed reliable sources.
Similarly,  the  officials  from Wardha presented the revised pro posal on 451 sq km buffer to Bor Tiger Reserve as identified in Wardha and Nagpur Forest divisions.
