CONSIDERING large scale availability of herbs in the district the Forest Department has started Herbal Medicine Project here with an objective to utilise available natural plants and also providing employment to local people.
Giving details of the project in a press conference here on Monday afternoon, Shreelaxmi Annabattula. Deputy Conservator of Forest, said that Gadchiroli district is known for its rich medicinal plants which have remained unused for years together. A meet of around 260 experts in the field from all over the district was organised by Forest Department and their traditional knowledge and information about herbal plants was collected. A district-level Vaidya Mandal was formed and the project was started with their help.
The project is showing good results with around 68 varieties of herbs collected and medicines being manufactured from them. told Annabattula. The project will provide sufficient financial income and employment to local people, he said. The plants which were earlier lying unused in the forests and were going waste will now be usedtp prepare medicines that will help ailing peopie, she added.
The collection of herbal plants and its processing has already started at Gadchiroli. More such units will be started in other parts of the district in days to come, told Annabattula.
The Forest Department has given necessary training to local people about identification of herbal plants and minor forest produce. Identity cards have also been issued to people collecting such plants. Precaution is being taken to see that the plants are not destroyed, assured Annabattula.
