RESPONDING to the request of EGS Minister Dr Nitin Raut to buy Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's residence situated at 10 King Henry's Road, at London. Maharashtra Government has forwarded a letter to Central Government expressing its wish to purchase the property.
Dr Raut urged Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to purchase this property. Landlord of the house is willing to sell the property. It is a historic place where Dr Ambedkar lived in 1921-22. During his stay. he studied at London School of Economics and Grey's Inn, and completed his DSc in economics and Bar-at-law in Greys Inn. Dr Amhedkar is highly respected in UK. The proposed cost of the residence has shown GBP 3.1 million plus stamp duly. The approximate cost is around GBP 2.17.000, legal cost, house insurance cost, a buffer (0 give leeway to bid above the asking price and accessary renovation to the property. The total cost is required to grant is GBP 4 million (around Rs 40 crore in Indian currency). Federation of Ainhedkarite and Buddhisi Organisations UK is working since 1985.
Raut said, it is a golden opportunity for Maharashtra Government to pay respect to one of the great est sons of India. This site can be utilised for strengthening international relations between UK and India. Therefore. State Government should grant GBP4 Million for purchase of this bungalow.
Maharashtra Government is seeking permission of Central Government to buy this property. Government should also request to British High Commission showing its willingness for buying the property, he added.
When media persons asked Dr Raul about possible political benefit from this move, the EGS Minister strongly refuted any political motive and slated that as a staunch Ainhedkarite. he is trying to protect memories of Dr Bahasaheb Ambedkar aiul places with which he associates for posterity.
