NCP's Khodke faction leader Reena is Amravati Mayor
CHARANJEET Kaur alias Reena Nanda of Nationalist Congress Party From led by Sanjay Khodke and Sheikh Jafar Sheikh Jabbar of Congress have been elected as the Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively of Amravati Municipal Corporation (AMC). Nanda along with 16 corporators of her group was also supported by 29 members of Congress. Indian National Congress instead of supporting ML A Ravi Rana led NCP group decided to go with rebellion faction of NCP headed by Sanjay Khodke. The dramatic development in the Mayor's election gave an interesting turn to politics in the corporation.
The result of this election gave a jolt to the official NCP group once again after the defeat in Lok Sabha elections. Reena Nanda took the charge as 14th Mavor of AMC and became the fifth woman Mayor of Amravati. Ii may be mentioned that this is for the first time that corporation has got both Mayor and Deputy Mayor from minority communities. The election process for Mayor and Deputy Mayor started at Dr Babasaheb Ambcdkar Auditorium of AMC at 11 am under the chairmanship of Kirankumar Gitte. District Collector. At first.Gitte verified all the eight nominations received for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively. Fifteen minutes of time was then allotted separately for the withdrawal of nomination forms. After the withdrawal of nomination forms four contenders including Neeta Nanda, NCP Front (Khodke Group). Rekha Tavwade of Shiv Sena, Gumfa Meshramol HSPand SapanaThakui of NCP Front (Kale Group) remained in the fray for the post of Mayor. Three contenders including Sheikh Jafar Sheikh Jabbar of Congress. Chhaya Ambadkarof BJPand Dipak Paiil of BSP were in the comes! for the posi of Deputy Mayor. Later, elections for Mayor took place by raising hands in which Neeta Nanda of NCP Front defeated Rekha Taywade of Shiv Sena by 26 votes. Nanda got 47 votes against 21 to Tay wade. Sapana Thakur of NCP got only eight votes while Gumfa Meshram had to satisfy only on three votes. Seven corporators of Janvikas-Jankalyan Front and one more remained neutral in the election.
For the post of Deputy Mayor. Sheikh Jafar of Congress defeated Chhaya Ambadkar with the same margin. Jafar got 47 votes against 21 to Ambadkar. Dipak Patil got only three votes. Total 14 corporators including seven from Janvikas-Jankalyan Front and 7 from NCP Front (Kale Group) remained neutral. It may be mentioned that this the second time when Sheikh Jafar
