'Naxals destroyed government propertyworth over Rs 2.25 crore in last 22 yrs'
THE Naxaliies have destroyed government property worth over Rs 2.25 crore in Gadchiroli and Gondia districts of Maharashtra in the last 22 years, said a press statement issued by the Police department here on Wednesday.
Considering the backwardness of these two districts, the Government has provided basic facilities of telecommunication, electricity etc. in the remote areas. Various Government offices also have been opened in these districts to reach the benefit of Government schemes to the people. However. Naxals have been opposing the development process and keeping the tribals away from development.
Out of the fear that if tribals are brought in the mainstream of development and their importance will be reduced, the Naxals have burnt down and destroyed the property worth Rs 2 crores, 25 lakh, 59 thousand 495
in the last 22 years, the statement said. The Naxals have burnt down 55 Gramp Panchayais (GPs) and have destroyed the property worth Rs 51. 78 lakh. During the year 1992 to 2014. they have burnt down 50 GPs in Gadchiroli district alone while 3 GPs from Gondia district also were burnt down, the release added.
In the 1980s, when Naxal movement just started in the district, the outlaws burnt down teak wood, ten-du leaves and then they turned their morcha to burning down the Government offices.
Besides the GPs. NaxaLs also burnt down some Talathi offices in Mascli village in Korchi laluka and Tekda village in Aheri taluka. They also attacked telephone towers in Gadchiroli and Gondia districts and destroyed property worth over Rs 1.41 crore.
The towers belonged to telephone companies like BSNL. Vodaphone. Idea. Reliance etc.. the release further informed.
The Naxals have also destroyed the material of electricity department worth Rs 33 lakh and created hurdles in providing power supply to the people of the district, the statement said.
