'Develop protected areas for dwindling vultures'
IT IS a mailer of great concern that the population of vultures has dwindled so much that they are almost on the verge of extinct ion. Therefore, he stressed the need for developing protected areas for thes birds, said Sarjan Bhagat. Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife).

Bhagat said, there are various reasons for depicting population of vulture species such as use of banned Diclofenac, loss of habitat, food and others. Forest Department is making efforts for undertaking regular survey of the habilats of scavengers, their population and other aspects for protection and conservation of these critically endangered birds falling the category of Schedule I of Wildlife Protection Act. 1972. he stated. In his presidential speech, Saxena said. vultures play a vital role in protection of environment and stressed the need for implementing measures for survival of the birds. The department started scheme of restaraunts for vultures and their conservation. he said adding that such scheme should only he continued if the results are satisfactory. Otherwise, it will he desirable to think of new schemes for their conservation, he added.
