GPs fail to take up plantation programme under MREGS
THE Gram Panchayais in Washim district have turned their back in taking up the tree plantation programme under the Maharashtra Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MREGS). The programme of tree plantation has merely been chalked out by the GPs only on paper, it is gathered.
Only 40 to 45 GPs out of 493 participated in the programme. Under the programme, the Government was expecting more and more GPs to come forward and have their participation in the tree plantation programme. During the period of two years in 2013-14 and 2014-15, only 110 lo 130 GPs actively participated in tree plantation programme under MREGS. Remaining GPs have evinced no interest al all. hence, it can be said that the tree plantation under the MREGS has got a major setback. If the data under the programme is collected, the scheme can be said to be a mere Hop. The respective Panchayat samities too are indifferent and not taking keen interest in implementing the programme. If the Panchayat Samities monitor the programme in a systematic way. the task of tree plantation can be easier. Had the PSs taken the review from time to lime, the responsibility could have been fixed on the respective GPs.
If the GPs are to be blamed for their failure in taking up the programme, the officers concerned are also equally responsible in shunning their duties in executing the desired work under MREGS.
If the negligence on the pan of the GPs and officers concerned continues, the scheme under MREGS will exist only on paper sans implementation. If all sections are indifferent, to achieve the desired objective under the scheme will be adversely effected.
