Dengue menace in Nagpur, 31 test positive
DENGUE is rampant in Nagpur. Though only 31 persons have tested positive between January and August of 2014. unofficial number might be double or triple as Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) says many private hospitals do not report the number to it. One person is said to be died because of dengue, but NMC Health Department says, it was not confirmed as the ELISA report was not received yet. According to doctors in city, the people suffering from dengue-like fever are also on rise, which NMC too admits, though the cases have been reduced as compared to the statistics of 2013. According to doctors people should not be panic hut they should take care to keep the premises clean and do not have stagnant water in the houses for longer time.
Jayashri Thote. Malaria-Filaria Officer of Health Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) said. "We have sent 165 serum samples to the laboratories. Earlier the tests were conducted at National Institute of Virology. Pune (NIV). Now we have the facility at Centinnel centres at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH) in Nagpur itself. Out of those 165 samples sent between January and August, 31 samples tested positive. One death has taken place and it is beingclaimed that it was due to Dengue but its report has not reached yet. This month we have sent 78 samples uptill now plus two samples have been sent in August, the report of the same has not receive vet."
The dengue cases were much less in 2010 but rose in 2011 onwards. During corresponding period last year there were 48 outbreaks with attack on 155 patients. 73 cases were tested positive and 3 deaths were registered in Nagpur division. In 2012 outbreaks, attacks, positive were reduced to half, though three dengue related deaths have been reported. In 2013 in Nagpur. between January and August 78 cases tested positive."
Thole claimed that the number of cases have been reduced because civic body officials visited houses. look samples, undertake fogging in prabhags atlcast once, informed people not to keep water in stagnant position.
Dr Madhyama Chahande. Assistant Director(Malaria). Health Services said "We conduct only ELISA test (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay uses components of the immune system and chemicals to detect immune responses in the body for example, to infectious microbes. Dengue is not a killer disease and timely treatment can save the patient. In 1995 its danger came to fore, but timely steps taken by government machinery then brought everything under control."
Dr Rajan Barokar. noted Critical Care consultant said, "The cases having dengue-like symptoms are coming more in number. In our hospital too. the cases of dengue are being reported in large number."
Dr Uday Bodhankar. noted paediatrician said that in his hospital 40 per cent cases have been tested positive tor dengue and he sent most of them to either Colours Hospital and Gatewell Hospital to have critical care.Dr Shilpa Hazare. noted Paediatrician at Gatewell Hospital pointed out, "Dengue is more prevalent.
