BHILAI Steel Plain, the flagship unit of SAIL, is fully Committed for
ensuring the green ambiance inside the steel plant, within township, and also in the peripheral areas of steel city Bhilai. BSP collective is now fully aware about the fact that industrial success and the responsibility of conserving environment are complementary to each other. Since its inception, Bhilai Steel Plant is initialing all the possible measures for conserving environment, and as its outcome, il is successful to a great extend in preserving trees and ensuring the green ambiance of steel city, while registering unprecedented records in production and productivity and also ensuring progress on all fronts. BSP also has the credit of conserving the natural resources, curtailing pollution and also that of transforming waste material and garbage in to a source of income. Among the significant measures initialed by BSP management for conserving environment, die most important is inception of 30 million ton capacity sewage recycling plant. After implementation of this project, the consumption of water in steel plant has reduced to a great extend. Bhilai Steel Plant, Township and DalliRajhara Mines are the proud recipients of IA/ISO: 140012004 Certificates. By establishing LD Slag Crushing and Screening Facility. LD Slag Recycling had been achieved to cent percent extent. In the year 2011-12. the water consumption has been reduced to 2.994 cubic meters for per Ion production  of crude sfeeL Forcunailing the wastage of water, one sewage treatment plant of 30 million liter water had been set up. On the other hand for ground water recharging, rain water harvesting scheme was also introduced at several places in Township. BSP management has also undertaken one more significant step for Introducing the non-conventional sources of energy. Environment Management Department (EMD) and Town Electrical Engineering Department (TEED)ofBSPhasalready installed Photovoltaic Solar Panels (2x 100 KV) at Bhilai Niwas for facilitating the place with power supply. The similar project is also on the anvil for its installation ai Isapl Bhavan. BSP. in its modernisation and expansion drive is initialing for curtailing green house gasses. and it has also undertaken the studies of Carbon and Water Foot Prints, for ensuring the long lime success in context of environment conservation in the present era of competitive industrial development. These measures were initiated in context of Prime Ministers National Action Plan for Climate Change in the year 2008. Product Carbon Foot Studies were undertaken in the year 2012-13. This mission was accomplished with the cooperation of IIT Mumbai while using ultramodern GAB1. LCA/PCA Software. The model set up by BSP was as per the standards of World Steel Association. The Water Footprint Studies undertaken by BSP were also accomplished with the cooperation of IIT Mumbai. The motive of undertaking such studies was to prepare Quantitative Water Footprint Assessment.
The project for safe disposal of PCBs is being implemented in Bhilai Steel Plant with the cooperation of UNIDO along with Ministry of Environment and Forests. This Project is one of its kind in the whole country, which would be proved beneficial not only for SAIL but would also be considered for curtailing POPs in Stockholm Convention and also facilitate all the Indian industries and also for Govt, of India. Making steel workers and children aware regarding (he significance of environment conservation is also important aspect of awareness and initiating measures for curtailing the depletion of natural resources. Considering this aspect. World Environment Day and Ozone Day are being observed in all the departments under BSP along with all the schools in steel city. Discouraging people for using polythene bags is also the integral part of environment conservation, which is being undertaken by school children with enthusiasm and active participation.
