Rlys may do away with experimental stoppages
TO SPEED-UP movement of the long distance trains. Railway Ministry is actively toying with an idea to do away with the experimental stoppages of Mail/Express trains that number over 2,400 in the country.
A conference of Chief Operating Managers (COMs) of 16 Railway Zones with Traffic Transportation Directorate of Railway Board recently discussed the issue of these stoppages as Railways move to introduce high speed trains. These stoppages are responsible for congestion on tracks resulting in slowing down trains speed. This means even decongeslion on traeks holds immense potential for introduction of new train services or faster turn around of goods wagons due to improvement in its running which is not possible due to infrastructure bottlenecks right now. After the meeting.
each of the 60 divisions of Indian Railway were asked for feedback by their respective Zonal bosses about the effective usage of these stoppages. The conference of COMs discusses a host of issues relating to train operations and also determines tuture challenges and strategies. The bi-annual meeting was held in the month of June in Bhopal. The experimental stoppages are those which arc not listed in original time
table of Mail Express train when it is introduced on a particular route. Over the period of time. Members of Parliament (MPs) build pressure on Railway Ministry and push for experimental stoppages at railway station in their constituencies. Though when such stops are granted, it is clearly mentioned that it is tor a period of six month and if response from passengers is not salisfaciory then the same may be withdrawn. Though this policy is in vogue, rarely had If Railway Ministry decided lo ruffle feathers of MPs to avoid unnecessary controversy as for public representatives it is a matter of prestige. So despite low travellers patronage, most of the stoppages continued to get extension from time to time. However, it results in slowing down the long distance trains as owing to these new stoppages, the speed automatically is restricted. The ripple effect is thus congestion on tracks as the necessary investment in addition of infrastructure was not done in country during last 60-years.
But now that economic hardships is forcing Railways to look for every possible way to cut back its expenses and shore-up its balance sheet, some harsh decisions have become imminent. Against this background, the respective divisions were asked to take a hard and critical look at experimental stoppages and decide is continuance on strictly merit basis.
Confirming the development. PRO Central Railway. Nagpur Division. PD Patil. said the division sends its feedback on monthly and tri-monthly basis.
He further staled that in division the experimental stoppage at present have been extended till September 30 and after that if some policy decision comes then same will be implemented. At division, these stops started from 2009 onwards
