Deprived of WBCIS, farmers told to take benefit of NAIS
AS State Government did not give extension to [he Pilot Weather based Crop Insurance Scheme (WBCIS) which ended on June 30, farmers will now have to participate in the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS). The WBCIS was applicable only in Amravali and Yavatmal districts of Amravati division but fanners could not participate much in it. as delayed Monsoon hampered sowing activities in region. Different crops in the State get affected during Kharip season due to variety of aspects of weather and hence WBCIS was implemented in the State. The scheme was implemented in 12 selected districts which include Amravali and Yavatmal of Amravali division and seven crops including rice, jowar. bajara. moong. urad. soyabean aixl cotton were covered in it. Farmers had to apply for the crop insurance after the sowing and the last date for it was June 30. This year due lo delayed Monsoon, sowing also delayed in most parts and that reduced the number of farmers benefet minE from weather based insurance scheme. The last date for participation in the scheme was June 30 and Join! Director's office had sent a proposal to extend the period of participation. Yet after that. scheme has not got any extension and it ended on Monday.
As a result of delay in sowing operation this Kharip season. Union Agriculture department has issued new orders and directed to implement National Crop Insurance Scheme for the year 2014-15. Farmers who have not taken crop insurance till June 30, will be eligible for new National Crop Insurance Scheme. Those farmers who have take crop insurance under WBCIS will not have eligibility for this new scheme. The last date for taking insurance under National Crop
