Universities n accommodate lay increase seats to students in colleges


TAKING cognisance of the widespread demand. Higher and Technical Education Department has allowed the non-agricultural universities in Maharashtra to increase number of seats 'as per requirement so that all the students who have passed HSC examination are accomodated in colleges for higher education.
While allowing the varsities to increase seats. Higher and Technical Education Department has stated that this raise will be effective for the academic session of 2014-15 only. Besides, the department has made it clear that the Government will not grant any aid for such additional seats. N B Marale. Deputy Secretary. Higher and Technical Education Department, issued a letter in this regard to all the Vice-Chancellors of non-agricultural universities in the State, on Thursday.
With the improvement in the result of Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) examination, the number of students passing out also increased. Soon after, barring the courses for which entrance examinations are conducted, people's representatives from across the State had expressed apprehensions that these many students might not get accomodated into colleges as number of seats available were not adequate. Responding to this, on June 25. Higher and Technical Education Department had asked the universities to increase admission capacity for sections of various courses up to a maximum of 10 per cent.
Still, on July I, various people's representatives met with Higher and Technical Education Minister and pointed out that there were many colleges, which had received applications more than the additional 10 per cent seats.
Taking cognisance of this. Higher and Technical Education Department has allowed the universities to increase number of seats 'as per requirement even beyond additional 10 per cent). While doing so. the universities have been asked to take appropriate decision in accordance with the provision under Section 83 (3) (c) of Maharashtra Universities Act.
Section 83 of the Maharashtra Universities Act of 1994 relates to procedure for affiliation. Under the subsection 3(c) of this Section, the Academic Council of university is empowered to take a decision on various issues including 'subjects, courses of study, the number of students to be admitted.'
