BOR Wildlife Sanctuary in Wardha district has now become 6th tiger reserve in Maharashtra and 47th in the county with the Ministry of Environment and Forests notifying it as a tiger reserve on Monday. It is spread inl38.12sqkmarea and is the smallest tiger reserve in the country. Prakash Jawadekar. Environmeni Minister, who is also Chairman of National Tiger Conservalion Authority, has announced creation of Bor Tiger Reserve at Delhi.
The State Government had submitted a proposal to NTCA in May 2014 to carve out this tiger reserve for security and conservation of tigers. This reserve consists of Bor Wildlife Sanctuary. New Bor Wildlife Sanctuary plus its extended portion of 16 sq km. thereby covering 138.12 sq km area. Now. Bor Tiger Reserve would get technical support and funds from the Central Government to maintain the park.
Bor Wildlife Sanctuary, which was notified by the State Government in 1970. has now four tigers, leopards, sloth bears, bisons, sambar. deer and inner wild animals. It is rich in biodiversity with a wide variety of flora and fauna.
Talking 10 The Hitavada. Uiiam Sawant, Assistant Conservator of Forest, Bor. said. Bor sanctuary forms an important link with Pench and Tadoba-Andhari tiger reserves with fragmented corridors. A study is in progress on corridor links of Bor with other jungles, he added. The basic welfare factors such as habitat, prey-base and availability of water are sufficient for the wild animals in Bor. There are 55 artificial water holes with solar system installed at 14 places while there are as many as 20 natural water holes, including Bor reservoir, where a herd of deer can be seen daily during evening hours. Sawant added.
It may be mentioned here that Jairam Ramesh. former Minister of Environment and Forests, had announced in the city on September 13. 2011 that Bor and Navegaon-Nagzira would be carved out as tiger reserves. Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve has already come into existence in Gondia district last year. The other tiger reserves in Maharashtra are Tadoba-Andhari. Melghat. Pench and Sahyadri.
