DGGA allows in-flight use of mobile phones, laptops
NOW. the air-travellers can use their mobile phones, laptops, tablets in all phases of flight. Directorate General Civil Aviation (DGCA) has amended its Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) to this effect.
For some years, there was a demand from passengers as well as flight operators to allow use of cellphones, lap-lops, tablets, electronic book-readers etc in all phases of flight. However, the CAR prohibited on-light use of the devices by passengers. Before take-offs, cabin crew used to ask me passengers on-board a flight to switch off their mobile phones and other electronic devices. The passengers were allowed to switch on the devices only after landing.
DGCA has carried out an amendment to its CAR Section 5 Series X Pan I relating to air safety on Wednesday and decided to allow the use of Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) including cellphones. But, the use of PEDs shall be in 'non-transmitting' mode commonly called flight/airplane mode. The amended CAR directs all operators for reporting of any suspected or confirmed PED interference or smoke or fire caused by PEDs to the DGCA.

According to an official release, during their meeting on April 17 wilh the Director General Civil Aviation, the scheduled operators had raised the demand for allowing use of PEDs during all phases of flight in the flight/airplane mode. DGCA examined their demand in view of new and current regulations of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Union Aviation Safely Agency (EASA). Under FAA and EASA Regulations, use of PEDs is allowed in the airplane mode in all phases of flight. This amendment to the CAR will allow air travellers to work. read, enjoy music, play video-games, watch video clips etc during flight by keeping their PEDs on flight/airplane mode. At the same time. DGCA has laid down the guidelines for training of the crew to enable them to handle the facility being provided to air-travellers.
