3,000 traders importing goods without paying LBT
WHY financial health of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is in duldturns at least from last one year? Apart from less recovery of laxes. NMC officials have detected at least 3.000 traders and business houses bringing goods worth crores of rupees in the city without local Body Tax (LBT) registration This is a figure of only two check posts -- Amravati Road and Railway Station. The figure may go well beyond 7,000 trader, alter checking all the check posts in coming months, sources added.
The civic body is losing substantial revenue from these importers who arc brazenly violating LBT norms. The LBT Department has deployed additional manpower to keep check on illegal trespassers. This clearly indicates that some found much to their dismay that around 3,000 mil of 7,000 importers do not have LBT registration. These importers are unloading their material to transporters or in any godown using hogus and assumed names. In coming days, the LBT department teams will search the real persons behind the importers and take stern action against them. The department has deployed its staff in two shifts to check the importers.
It may be mentioned that Maharashtra Government has enforced LBT from last financial year in lieu of Octroi. Stale government has accepted maximum conditions or the traders and business persons and gave them freedom to access their tax and pay accordingly. In-spite of this, the traders were not happy with the decision of State Government.
LBT recovery is Rs 300 crore in last financial year. The illegal import of goods has increased the won of cash-strapped NMC.
The LBT shortfall for FY 2013-14 was pegged at Rs 200 crore due to which functioning of NMC was crippled.
