THE prestigious Purushotiam Karandak. leading theatrical event of Maharashtra State, is entering in its 50th year in 2014. This is the second year of the contest to be held on Nagpur centre. The theatre festival is scheduled to be held at Scientific Society Hall. Laxmi Nagar from October 13 to 15 this year. This year too. the prizes will be given in the field of writing, direction and acting. Vijay Patwardhan. Madhavi Soman and Anil Palkar will be the judges at this years' contest.

The festival is going to be special this year, as it is celebrating its 50th  year. Many new events. prizes and special mentions will be introduced from this year. Purushottam Karandak has a history of 50 years.  'By the students for the   students'  Purushouam Karandak is about energy, enthusiasm, dedication, creativity, persistence  and much more. When Ramhhau  Datye started Purushouam Karandak. little did he think that it would one day be an irreplaceable part of college life. Today. 50 years after its ineepiion, Purushottam Karandak is not just an event but also a tradition and religion.This is the only competition that has a tradition and culture wherein: the theatrical spirit is brought alive. The spirit  of Purushottam goes beyond competition. The credit of making Purushottam a tradition goes to Maharash-triaya  Kalopasak, Pune, and a body that I

eveni over years. Ii has served as the stepping-stone in the lives of many artistes who have created a niche for themselves in the film industry Sonali Kulkarni. Subodh Bhave. Mrinal Kulkarni and Rahul Solapurkar lo name a few. Purushottam as a ritual is defined by the rules and regulations that are set by Kalopasak over years, which is very artist-centric.

For Kalopasak this is not commercial theatre where audience is the deciding factor hut the stage that is created by (he students and for the students.

Also, anything that can bother the participants or the performers is prohibited here, for example, no entry for the audience during the performance and mobile phones are not allowed in the auditorium

Students. who look at Purushottam as their first encounter, learn the basics of acting and theaire here. Purushonam leaches them so many things ranging from PR to finance to lights amt sound, acting. direction and the minutest of the aspects of theatre.

All these might look like problems for outsiders but for the ones passionate about theatre, this is worship. For initial some days, these botherations affect your performance.

Then, comes the day of the first stage rehearsal. Then after the first rehearsal, the efforts dissolve and the differences disappear. At die end. the team spirit strives only for one thing - performance and applause.

The prize distribution function at Nagpur centre will be graced by actor Subodh Bhave.
