Mystery shrouds schoolgirl's death


A FIFTH standard student from Saraswati Vidyalaya. Sirsi (Kojhi) in Armori laluka Shruti Kalidas Shambharkar (II) met a tragic death as she was bitten by an unidentified insect in the school itself.
The incident has spread quite a panic in the area and it has also brought forward the lack of cleanliness in the schools and also lack of timely medical treatment in the district. According to information given by the school teachers, the girl was bitten by some unknown insect at around 4-00 pm on August 20 last. When the girl started vomiting, she was rushed to Primary Health Centre of Wairagad around 6 km away from the school.
The PHC doctors gave some preliminary treatment but her condition deteriorated upon which she was shifted to Rural Hospital. Armori, 10 km away from the PHC. At Armori hospital the condition of the girl again worsened and she was referred to the General Hospital. Gadchiroli at around 12 in the night. travelling 35 km distance, but the doctors on duty declared her brought dead after examining the girl.
Surprisingly enough, no doctors could diagnose the exact insect biting the girl and as such they gave her a treatment of unknown bite. Doctor at Wairagad PHC told the patient showed no any symptoms of scorpion or snake bite. Had the girl been given timely treatment, her life could have been saved, alleged the father of the strl.
The Medical Superintendent of Armori Rural Hospital told though exact cause of death can be ascertained only after postmortem report, prima facie the girl seems to have died due to aspiration as she had eaten some fruits and biscuits after she was settled and then vomited.
As there was no facility of ventilator, the girl was shifted to General Hospital, he added. The last rites were performed on the girl at her native village Kojbi on August 21 in presence of the villagers and the school staff. The untimely death of Shruti has spread a panic and has become a matter of discussion in the area.
