MAHARASHTRA Government leclared 'Glory of Alapalli' in gadchiroli district as Biological Heritage Site on Wednesday by conidering its ecological, ethnical, his-orical values and genetic quality of lora and avian fauna. This is the first site to be notified all over the .
Maharashtra State Biodiversity board (MSBB) Nagpur. studied the cinity of 'Glory of Alapalli' and submitted a proposal to the government for declaring this area as biological Heritage Site.
This was disclosed by dr Dilip singh. Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and Member secretary of MSBB. Nagpur, while talking to The Hitavada' here on :friday. He said, with the declaraion of this new site, importance of protection. pride for coming genertion and ecotourism value nercased. The hoard would now subnil a proposal to the National Biodiversity Authority. Delhi, for development and beautification of the site for which it could sanction Rs one lakh. Incase of good response from tourists, a guide could be deployed at the place in the fuiure [o enlighten the visitors.
MSBB will undertake study of four to five different places of biological importance and submit a proposal to the government. urging it lo declare them as heritage sites. Dr Singh pointed out.
Considering its uniqueness and magnificent mixed forest, it was aptly named as "Glory of Alapalli' by its founder MacDonald and Mujumdar. The forest belongs to southern tropical moist-mixed deciduous forests. As per records available, the total number of floral species identified in this plot is 113 belonging 10 50 plan! families. There are 55 tree, six shrub. 18 herb. 26 climber, six grass species plus one bambini enlisted nil dale. The total tree count is 2041 - 333 trees per hectare. It also consists of natural habitat for Giant Squirrel. Malabar Piedhornhill. Egrets. Pond herons. Parakeets. Drangocs. Bcc-caters. Kingfishers. Dove. Cormoramsetc. Thus, the area represents the mosaic of natural and semi-natural habitats of floral and faunal species and contaias a significant diversity of life forms.
It even shelters a number of aquatic, terrestrial and arboreal species. Local people have sentimental attachment with this beautiful forest patch and also constructed Shri Hanuman Temple in the vicinity. The area is having a number of giant trees, particularly teak, with the girth at breast height as higher as 5.61 mtr (above 18 ft) and height as 38 mtr.
The government notified this heritage site under section 37 of the Biological Diversity Act. 2002 and section 22 of Maharashtra Biological Diversity Rules. 2008.
